I warmly invite you to the upcoming conference “Forests of Antennas, Oceans of Waves. An Exploration of Art and Theory in Electromagnetic Urban Environments” at the Museum für Kommunikation Berlin, including the presentation of a new durational and site-specific sound installation by Mario de Vega. On Friday 23 September starting at 18:30h, the conference will kick-off with a keynote talk by Jennifer Gabrys, the start of the 24-hour-cycle of the sound installation, and drinks. The conference will continue on Saturday 24 September from 10:00-18:00h with panel discussions and the possibility to experience the sound installation until 18:00h. Please note that registration is necessary, participation is free of charge:

The field of scientific and artistic engagement with the topic of 5G and electromagnetic urban environments in terms of social, aesthetic and cultural issues – beyond the usual medical and engineering framework – is still in its infancy. In this respect, we see the conference as an urgently needed prelude to a political-aesthetic engagement with the topic, which has so far mainly been occupied by telecommunications companies and urban development actors under the buzzwords "networking," "digitalization," and "automation.”

The conference is structured by three topics. The first panel, City as Resource? The Socio-political Dimensions of Smart City will focus on socio-political aspects associated with the keyword "smart city", because there can be no smart city without stable 5G.
The second panel, Uncanny Radiation? Towards an Aesthetics of Electromagnetic Fields, is devoted to the techno-aesthetic and cultural dimensions of radio networks. The focus is on the very heterogeneous spectrum of social perceptions of networked infrastructures and antennas in public space.
The third panel, Radiation as Infrastructure? Techno-ecological Spheres finally looks at the techno-ecological aspects of network technologies such as 5G in terms of resource consumption and sustainability.

Ich lade Euch herzlich zur Konferenz “Forests of Antennas, Oceans of Waves. An Exploration of Art and Theory in Electromagnetic Urban Environments” im Museum für Kommunikation Berlin ein, bei der eine neue ortsspezifische Klanginstallation von Mario de Vega vorgestellt wird. Am Freitag, den 23. September ab 18:30 Uhr wird die Konferenz mit einem Impulsvortrag von Jennifer Gabrys, dem Beginn des 24-Stunden-Zyklus der Klanginstallation und einem Umtrunk eröffnet. Die Konferenz wird am Samstag, den 24. September von 10:00-18:00 Uhr mit Podiumsdiskussionen und der Möglichkeit, die Klanginstallation bis 18:00 Uhr zu erleben, fortgesetzt (Registrierung erforderlich, Teilnahme kostenfrei):

Die wissenschaftliche und künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema 5G und elektromagnetischen urbanen Räumen in sozialer, ästhetischer und kultureller Hinsicht, also jenseits des üblichen medizinischen und technischen Rahmens, steckt noch in den Kinderschuhen. Insofern sehen wir die Konferenz als einen dringend notwendigen Auftakt zu einer politisch-ästhetischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema, das bisher vor allem von Telekommunikationsunternehmen und Stadtentwicklungsakteuren unter den Schlagwörtern »Vernetzung«, »Digitalisierung« und »Automatisierung« besetzt ist. 

Die Konferenz gliedert sich in drei Themenbereiche. Das erste Panel mit dem Titel »City as Resource? The Socio-political Dimensions of Smart City« konzentriert sich auf gesellschaftspolitische Aspekte, die mit dem Schlagwort »Smart City« verbunden sind, denn ohne stabiles 5G kann es keine Smart City geben. 
Das zweite Panel mit dem Titel »Uncanny Radiation? Towards an Aesthetics of Electromagnetic Fields« widmet sich den technisch-ästhetischen und kulturellen Dimensionen von Funknetzen. Dabei geht es um das sehr heterogene Spektrum gesellschaftlicher Wahrnehmungen von vernetzten Infrastrukturen und Antennen im öffentlichen Raum.  
Das dritte Panel, »Radiation as Infrastructure? Techno-ecological Spheres« beleuchtet schließlich die technisch-ökologischen Aspekte von Netztechnologien wie 5G im Hinblick auf Ressourcenverbrauch und Nachhaltigkeit. 

Die Veranstaltung findet in englischer Sprache statt. Anmeldung erforderlich, Teilnahme kostenfrei.
