I warmly invite you to the fifth intervention of our event series "Forests of Antennas, Oceans of Waves”, this Saturday 16 July from 12:00 - 15:00! You will find us at the Uferhallen in Wedding with our mobile exhibition and a design fiction workshop with anthropologist, design researcher, and writer Nicolas Nova from the Near Future Laboratory. Antennas and other infrastructures of mobile telecommunications have become a new, synthetic form of nature for us: Surveillance cameras, routers, traffic sensors, mobile towers, WiFi antennas, cables such as copper wire or fibre optics, data centres, server farms. The urban environment is full of such devices and the myriad services they rely on - from repair shops for everyday devices to maintenance teams replacing underground cables.
In this 3-hour workshop, led by Nicolas Nova, participants are instructed to use design fiction methods to create a tangible and vivid prototype of these synthetic landscapes that sketch a possible (and more habitable) near future. Based on a series of observations and street interviews, participants will explore the potential of the digital infrastructure of the urban environment for the design of products, services and interactions.

NICOLAS NOVA (The Near Future Laboratory)
Nicolas Nova is an anthropologist, design researcher, and writer. With a multidisciplinary background in social sciences, information technologies, design, and natural sciences, he divides his time between running international field-work projects, documenting new signals in the world, and making sense of them to inform design or strategy. Co-founder of a design fiction agency called The Near Future Laboratory, he is also Professor at the Geneva University of Arts and Design (HEAD–Genève).

Antennen und andere Infrastrukturen mobiler Telekommunikation sind für uns zu einer neuen, synthetischen Form von Natur geworden: Überwachungskameras, Router, Verkehrssensoren, Mobilfunktürme, WiFi-Antennen, Kabel wie Kupferdraht oder Glasfaserkabel, Datenzentren, Serverfarmen. Die städtische Umwelt ist voll von solchen Geräten und den unzähligen Diensten, auf die sie angewiesen sind – von Reparaturwerkstätten für Alltagsgeräte bis hin zu Wartungsteams, die unterirdische Kabel austauschen.
In dem dreistündigen Workshop, geleitet von Nicolas Nova, werden die Teilnehmer*innen angeleitet, über Methoden der Design Fiction einen greifbaren und anschaulichen Prototypen dieser synthetischen Landschaften zu erstellen, die eine mögliche (und bewohnbarere) nahe Zukunft skizzieren. Auf der Grundlage einer Reihe von Beobachtungen und Straßeninterviews werden die Teilnehmer*innen das Potenzial der digitalen Infrastruktur des städtischen Umfelds für die Gestaltung von Produkten, Dienstleistungen und Interaktionen untersuchen.

NICOLAS NOVA (The Near Future Laboratory)
Nicolas Nova ist Anthropologe, Designforscher und Autor. Mit einem multidisziplinären Hintergrund in Sozialwissenschaften, Informationstechnologien, Design und Naturwissenschaften befasst er sich mit der Durchführung von internationalen Feldforschungsprojekten, der Dokumentation neuer Signale in der Welt und deren Auswertung für Design und Strategie. Er ist Mitbegründer der Design-Fiction-Agentur The Near Future Laboratory und Professor an der Genfer Hochschule für Kunst und Design (HEAD-Genève).
