On the first episode of Chromatic Wednesday's “Sustainability” month, we are excited to host a talk between Onur Ceritoğlu and Sezai Ozan Zeybek. The discussion titled Sustain What? Governing Life on the Verge of Extinction will offer a timely assessment of sustainability, beginning with what we want to sustain from our carbon-fuelled societies. What alternatives have we developed so far in terms of new life spaces and what aspirations can we draw from the current political movements?

In the second part, Ceritoğlu and Zeybek will turn their attention to new ways of coexistence with other beings, calling it the probiotic turn instead of sustainability. As opposed to simplified/monoculture versions of life, there are mushrooming attempts of cohabiting the world with a diversity of beings - from rewilding forests to tending to gut flora. They aim to manage life to enhance life by inviting further cooperation from non-humans. Finally, we will discuss the implications and limits of these new techniques.

Onur Ceritoglu trained as an architect is an artist and academic researcher. He is mainly interested in infrastructural assemblages, both social and material, within rural and urban contexts. Dr. Sezai Ozan Zeybek is a human geographer at FU, Berlin. He works on more-than-human collectives and ecologies, post-colonial formations of modernity, state violence and militarism. His book, Animals in the Recent History of Turkey: Opening Social Sciences to non-Humans has come out in Turkish in 2020. He is the co-host of the podcast series Havadan Sudan. He also has five published children’s books and currently working on a storytelling manual for grown-ups.

In der ersten Folge zum Thema "Nachhaltigkeit" im Rahmen der Veranstaltungsreihe “Chromatic Wednesdays” freuen wir uns, ein Gespräch zwischen Onur Ceritoğlu und Sezai Ozan Zeybek zu präsentieren. Die Diskussion mit dem Titel "Sustain What? Governing Life on the Verge of Extinction" wird eine zeitgemäße Einschätzung der Nachhaltigkeit bieten, beginnend mit der Frage, was wir von unserer kohlenstoff-befeuerten Gesellschaft erhalten wollen. Welche Alternativen haben wir bisher in Bezug auf neue Lebensräume entwickelt und welche Bestrebungen können wir aus den aktuellen politischen Bewegungen ableiten?

Im zweiten Teil des Programms wenden sich Ceritoğlu und Zeybek neuen Formen des Zusammenlebens mit anderen Lebewesen zu und nennen dies den probiotischen Turn anstelle von Nachhaltigkeit. Im Gegensatz zu vereinfachten/monokulturellen Versionen des Lebens gibt es aufpilzende Versuche, die Welt mit einer Vielfalt von Lebewesen zusammenzuleben - von Rewilding-Wäldern bis zur Pflege der Darmflora. Sie zielen darauf ab, das Leben zu leiten, um das Leben zu verbessern, indem sie weitere Kooperation von Nicht-Menschen einladen. Schließlich werden wir die Auswirkungen und Grenzen dieser neuen Techniken diskutieren.

Onur Ceritoglu, ausgebildet als Architekt, ist Künstler und akademischer Forscher. Er interressiert sich an infrastrukturellen, sozialen und materiellen Assemblagen in ländlichen und urbanen Kontexten. Dr. Sezai Ozan Zeybek ist Humangeograph an der FU, Berlin. Er arbeitet über mehr-als-menschliche Kollektive und Ökologien, postkoloniale Formationen der Moderne, staatliche Gewalt und Militarismus. Sein Buch, mit dem Titel “Tiere in der jüngeren Geschichte der Türkei: Öffnung der Sozialwissenschaften für Nicht-Menschen” ist 2020 auf türkischer Sprache erschienen. Er ist Co-Moderator der Podcast-Serie “Havadan Sudan”. Außerdem hat er fünf Kinderbücher veröffentlicht und arbeitet derzeit an einem Handbuch zum Geschichtenerzählen für Erwachsene.

Chromatic Wednesdays is a culmination of our recent collective consciousness — the pandemic has disrupted our ability, creativity, and production. How do we as artists and intellectuals develop alternative forms of thinking and articulate this unclear existential situation? How can we get out of this limbo? How can we expel it?

Addressing these questions, Apartment Project developed a program titled Chromatic Wednesdays, which consists of 33 individual events, that will take place within eleven months starting from December 2, 2020. Each month will revolve around specific themes on current issues such as; immigration, pandemic, ecology, sustainability, gentrification, gender, survival, boundaries, geography, freedom of speech, and future. On three Wednesdays per month, artists, musicians, performers, scholars, scientists, and cultural practitioners will be invited to collaborate and share their research, practices, and experiences. The space will host a variety of events such as; concerts, performances, workshops, film screenings, lectures, exhibitions, readings, panel discussions, and dinner gatherings.

Chromatic Wednesdays ist ein Höhepunkt unseres neuesten kollektiven Bewusstseins - die Pandemie hat unsere Fähigkeit, Kreativität und Produktion gestört. Wie können wir als Künstler und Intellektuelle alternative Formen des Denkens entwickeln und diese unklare existenzielle Situation artikulieren? Wie können wir aus diesem Schwebezustand herauskommen? Wie können wir sie vertreiben?

Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, entwickelte Apartment Project ein Programm mit dem Titel "Chromatic Wednesdays", das aus 33 Einzelveranstaltungen besteht, die innerhalb von elf Monaten ab dem 11. November 2020 stattfinden werden. Jeder Monat dreht sich um spezifische Themen zu aktuellen Themen wie: Einwanderung, Pandemie, Ökologie, Nachhaltigkeit, Gentrifizierung, Geschlecht, Überleben, Grenzen, Geographie, Redefreiheit und Zukunft. An drei Mittwochen pro Monat werden Künstler, Musiker, Performer, Wissenschaftler und Kulturschaffende eingeladen, zusammenzuarbeiten und ihre Forschungen, Praktiken und Erfahrungen auszutauschen. Der Raum wird eine Vielzahl von Veranstaltungen wie Konzerte, Performances, Workshops, Filmvorführungen, Vorträge, Ausstellungen, Lesungen, Podiumsdiskussionen und Dinner-Versammlungen beherbergen.
