*Alexei Blinov: Hero of the Cybersphere (1965-2019) ***

I use Cybersphere rather than Cyberspace as Alexei occupied the digital 
space just above the earth's crust with WiFi and lasers and not only the 
imagined Cyberspace of the virtual — World on a Wire (Welt am Draht), or 
the Internet.

I knew Alexei in the late 1990s/2000s in London and Berlin, whether 
running Open Wireless aerial building workshops together at the 
University of Openness in London's East End — a self instituted 
university — or at the BerLon

‘PicoPeering Agreement' meeting in Bootlab or at 'Wizards of OS' FOSS 
conference — both in Berlin, where Alexei would be demoing the 'Hive' 
mesh-networking WiFi system.

Alexei was always the one driving things forward, quiet crazily — with 
wires popping out all over the place, a continual work-in-progress, but 
importantly with the courage that makes a true artist — that of not 
needing to inhabit the persona of the artists or make works that need to 
look like art.
