Composer and artist Ellen Fullman (http://facebook.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=965bfdc5483b693a98a919fdf&id=709dbb224e&e=b127b6a5ed) began developing her unique performance art piece “The Long String Instrument” in 1981. This large-scale site-specific work consists of 56 over 10 metre-long metallic strings, anchored by a wooden resonator. The performer moves back and forth among the wires with rosin-covered fingers and the instrument produces droney tonalities that cannot be achieved with traditional instruments. The experience of interacting with “The Long String Instrument” has been compared to standing inside of a huge grand piano.

Fullman’s Long String Instrument creates a sense of majestic vastness, its lines stretching off towards an implied infinity. Listening to it, you feel like you are inside some cyclopean subterranean grotto… its bejewelled walls glistening with an alien lustre. – Biba Kopf, The Wire

Having felt restrained by the limits of traditional instruments, composer, producer and artist, Konrad Sprenger (http://facebook.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=965bfdc5483b693a98a919fdf&id=758f4213c2&e=b127b6a5ed) has spent years developing rhythmic patterns based on algorithms, and customized instrument like his computer-controlled multi-channel electric guitar. “My guitar gives me the possibility to discover almost every aspect of the sound produced by the excitation of the string – as if scientifically under a magnifying glass.” He says. “I can control such parameters as the speed and time, length of the attack, the intensity, the pitch , and the location of each string in space by the use of 6 speakers.”

CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE´s organ concert, STINE JANVIN (http://facebook.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=965bfdc5483b693a98a919fdf&id=0c10e1a046&e=b127b6a5ed)

A contemporary of Terry Riley, Phill Niblock, and Steve Reich, Charlemagne Palestine (http://facebook.us11.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=965bfdc5483b693a98a919fdf&id=0dcbd6161f&e=b127b6a5ed) plays intense, ritualistic music intended to unsettle audiences' expectations of what is beautiful and meaningful in music. A composer-performer originally trained to be a cantor, in this concert Palestine will construct overtone clusters sounding like a waterfall and absorbing the listeners in the surrounding architecture of the church.

In a similar way, composer and performer Stine Janvin (http://facebook.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=965bfdc5483b693a98a919fdf&id=81d1ad0ff5&e=b127b6a5ed) shifts the focus towards the acoustic and psychoacoustic effects of repetitive, though deconstructed patterns and rave rhythms. Stine employs her voice to imitate multi-layered synthesizer sequences, light and darkness to disorient our perception, and create unnatural aural soundscapes of almost mystical beauty.

St. Elisabethkirche Invalidenstr. 3 10115 Berlin (http://facebook.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=965bfdc5483b693a98a919fdf&id=e2d366043c&e=b127b6a5ed)

The Ever Present Orchestra is dedicated to the presentation of the exceptional work of the American composer Alvin Lucier. The orchestra attempts to make Lucier’s beating-pattern-focused instrumental music approachable to a wide audience with its uncommon instrumentation of 4 electric guitars, 3 saxophones, 4 violins, and a piano. Along with classical musicians, the presence of prominent Lucier interpreters such as experimental guitarist Oren Ambarchi and Stephen O’Malley allows for the ensemble to appeal to a wider audience than the conventional contemporary music scene.
