Video Out Distribution (Vancouver, Canada) is pleased to present SyntheticSound, a program of experimental video shorts for an evening at NK Projekt on 10 September at 8pm.

This screening, curated by Alan Kollins, formerly of Video Out Distribution, brings together a collection of significant experimental video and music works from the Crista Dahl Media Library & Archive.

The program attempts to chronicle important cinematic experimentations, technological advancements, subcultural movements, and societal analyses with works dating from the 1970s to now – videos by Laurie McDonald, COUM Transmissions with Cosey Fanni Tutti, Arlo Action with Terry Riley, Fantasy Factory, Clark Nikolai, Eric Lorenz, Michael Venus, Mathilde Geromine, Elizabeth Vander Zagg, Brendan Baudat, Lief Hall, and Duane Linklater.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Berlin-based artist and theorist, Nine Yamamoto-Masson. Panelists: Imogen Heath & Farahnaz Hatam.

About the Archive:

The Satellite Video Exchange, a Vancouver artist-run center (established in 1973, currently known as VIVO) developed a DIY approach to video collection and distribution (snail mail tape exchange) during the infancy of video art practice. The SVE provided fertile ground for a collection of experimental video works to eventually grown into one the more robust and important archive of its kind. For more than 40 years, the Crista Dahl Media Library & Archive has developed an essential home for media and performance artists, video makers and electronic artists across Canada and abroad.

"Since inception, the archive is driven by a belief that society would become more socially responsible through the distribution of information unavailable through dominant communication channels.” -Making Video "In": The Contested Ground Of Alternative Video on The West Coast, Jennifer Abbott, 2000.

Nine Eglantine Yamamoto-Masson is a French-Japanese artist, curator and PhD candidate at ASCA (Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis). In academic research and artistic practice, her work examines historical memory, ideology, resistance and counter-narratives at the site of their encounter with socially engaged art as a critical forum.
In Berlin she works with anti-racist organisations that provide support for refugees and with organisations that work against gender-based-discrimination.
Her work is invested in the potential of art to offer alternative avenues through which to articulate socio- historical concerns, such as the use of fiction as a testing ground for reality and a strategy towards a differentiated understanding of the contemporary.
