Invitation to the Symposium Genius Loci "Weimar Media Facades"

The 'Media Facade‘ Symposium invites artists, architects designers, media designers,
software developers, and theorists of various disciplines to take part in a critical dialog on
media projection.

The symposium takes place from August 5 to 11 as part of the Genius Loci Weimar facade projection
festival. Besides their function as multidisciplinary projects of highly artistic qualities,
Facades do also work as mediators between today and the past, residents and authorities, but
also serves commercial interests or reflect political or planning strategies.

In this context we are scrutinizing the questions of spaces for social interactions, dynamics,
transformations and digitalized environment, democratization of public spaces, the differentiation
of permanent and temporary media facades, the influences of commercialization of
facades and the sustainable effects of such projects and not least media festivals for cities. Artists
are explaining in detail their positions, methods and concepts for this young form of art.
Workshops (05.-08.08.13) offer the possibility to experience and experiment projection techniques,
coding, choreography, sound, videomapping etc., mentored by experts. The workshop
results can be presented and discussed on the selected festival facades.

The lectures of the first day of the symposium (09.-11.08.13) give an overview on the significance
of facades, the art to narrate, the development of videomapping software, the necessity
of high-end projection technology, and the future of spatial audio. On the second day artists
and scientists reflect their methods and projects. On the last symposium day we want to
develop a dialog, moderated by John Jaspers, with the audience to discuss the 'role of media
facades and media festivals‘.

Besides that, all 'professionals‘ await a networking-event in Best Western Premier Grand Hotel
Russischer Hof, and all participants an exhibition to present own artwork.

The symposium language is English.
