APRIL 2013

TUESDAY 23rd – from 7pm

IAN NAGOSKI – LECTURE

His new lecture, titled The Widow’s Joy: Pride, Genius, Grief & Lies from International 78rpm Recordings, seamlessly presents recordings from the mid-1910s to 1950 across a wide geographic area.
Musicians, famous and obscure, “classical” and “folk” alike are presented side-by-side as Nagoski describes one life after another of a creative person whose biography was marked by displacement, tragic circumstance, great opportunity, and forces of history beyond their control.

In the process, Nagoski shares rarely-heard and often deeply touching performances, some joyous and some heartbreaking, while asking questions about the value of life and meaning of music.

Following his tour of Europe last year to discuss and share the treasure trove of lost music he unearthed in producing the collection To What Strange Place: The Music Of The Ottoman-American Diaspora 1916-1929 (Tompkins Square),
Ian Nagoski crosses the Atlantic again to reveal more beauty he has found amongst crates of forgotten 78s and that led to the creation of 6 more collections of music from various continents and for such great labels as Dust-To-Digital, Important, Mississippi and others.

He is the featured guest in the current issue of SoundAmerican.org (featured in this month’s issue of the Wire), where he is described as, “one of the most singularly important young voices in the preservation of music in America”

IAN NAGOSKI will be in Berlin already from the 20th, helping Rich Pell of the Center for Postnatural History with an exhibit that opens at the Museum fur Naturkunde on the 22nd. >> more about it:

JUNE 2013

SATURDAY 8TH FROM 6PM

PRESENTATION & OPENING ::::
THE INSTALLATION WILL STAY UNTIL JUNE 13TH
RELATED PERFORMANCE TO BE ANNOUNCED!

Montage Cinema Revived by the EMO-Synth is the final performance in a series realized by the
collective Office Tamuraj and the curator Astrid David. A renewing interactive multimedia system, the EMO-Synth (Produced & Founded by new media artist Valery Vermeulen), plays a central role as well as the emotional man-machine.

During performances and demonstrations the system automatically generates and manipulates sounds and images to direct the user in certain predefined emotional states.

Emotional reactions are hereby measured and processed by the means of biosensors that register various psychofysiological parameters such as heart rate (ECG) and stress level (GSR, galvanic skin response).

As the EMO-Synth project has an outspoken multidisciplinary character its development relies on different techniques stemming from a broad range of domains.
These include artificial intelligence, affective computing, psychophysiology, algorithmic music composition + sound and image generation.

For the realisation of Montage Cinema Revived by the EMO-Synth, the EMO-Synth is integrated into a cinematographic setting.

During the performances at Liebig12, the EMO-Synth will automatically generate ideal personalized soundtracks with maximal emotional impact that accompany re-edited versions of dedicated experimental video material.
For the automatic music generation, synthesized as well as live music sounds are used.

The visuals remixed by the EMO- Synth will originate from two different sources:

the experimental movie “Line-dot-plane” by visual artist Remco Roes
& the black and white classic “The Phantom of the Opera” (1927) by Julian Rupert.

The performances of Montage Cinema Revived by the EMO-Synth rely on the most recent prototype – Prototype 05.2 – of the EMO-Synth.
This prototype was realized during a residency and exhibition called Tangible Feelings at the Center for Digital Cultures and Technologies (iMAL, www.imal.org) in september 2011.

THIS INSTALLATION IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC TO INTERACT & 2 EVENING ARE SOON GOING TO BE SCHEDULED FOR THE PERFORMANCES.
