                Laboratory Berlin möchte Sie einladen zu einem Gespräch
                mit dem Künstlerkollektiv <b>C-LAB</b> (UK) und dem
                Biohacker <b>Rüdiger Trojok</b> (Berlin), das von <i>Desiree

                  Förster</i> und <i>Daniela Silvestrin</i> am 24.
                August ab 15 Uhr präsentiert wird.<br>

                size="2">C-LAB ist ein in London (UK) ansässiges und von
                den beiden Künstlern und Wissenschaftlern <b>Laura
                  Cinti</b> und <b>Howard Boland</b> gegründetes
                Künstler-Kollektiv, das sich kritisch mit den
                zeitgenössischen Überlappungen von Kunst, Wissenschaft
                und Technologie auseinandersetzt. Fokus der Arbeit von
                Cinti und Boland liegt dabei auf der Untersuchung und
                Erforschung der Bedeutung und Eigenarten all dessen, was
                organisches und synthetisches Leben betrifft. Ihr
                Anliegen ist dabei, eine Plattform für eine sowohl
                künstlerische als auch wissenschaftliche Reflexion und
                Diskussion zu schaffen. <br>

                size="2">In ihren aktuellen experimentellen
                Kunstprojekten haben C-LAB mehrere genetische Konstrukte
                entwickelt, die zu neuartigem Verhalten von E. coli
                Bakterien führen; die Künstler erforschen dabei die
                Möglichkeiten der synthetischer Biologie und Techniken
                des Genetic Engineerings im Kunstkontext (z. B. in
                Kunstwerken wie <em>kate, katEred, Stressostat</em> und
                <em>Banana Bacteria</em>).</font></font></font></font><font

            Auch die Do-it-Yourself Szene hat begonnen,
            molekularbiologische Experimente in privaten Räumen
            durchzuführen. Die Technologien und Chemikalien die sie dazu
            benötigen, werden meist ebenso über das Internet bezogen wie
            die theoretischen Grundlagen und Arbeitsanleitungen. Diese
            wachsende Szene trifft sich in Online-Foren oder Festivals,
            sie sind weltweit organisiert. Die Bewegung ruft neben
            Faszination auch Unbehagen hervor, das Missbrauchspotenzial
            moderner Biotechniken macht besonders Angst in Zeiten
            wiederkehrender Warnungen vor Epidemien durch Viren wie
            SARS, H5N1. Zugleich kann die Demokratisierung von
            Technologien und Wissen zu neuen Impulsen für die
            Wissenschaft führen und die öffentliche Debatte und
            Bewusstsein bereichern. <br>

            size="2">Nach dem Einblick in die künstlerische Praxis wird
            der in Berlin ansässige Biohacker Rüdiger Trojok einen
            Vortrag zur Do-it-Yourself Biohacking Szene, sowie
            Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Anwendung von Biotechnologien
            in privaten Räumen halten. Rüdiger Trojok ist angehender
            Diplombiologe und forscht im eigenen Biolabor auf der Suche
            nach neuen, nicht unbedingt zweckgebundenen
            Manipulationsformen organischen Lebens auf mikrobiologischer
            Ebene.<br>

            size="2">In einer an die Vorträge anschließenden
            Diskussionsrunde werden die unterschiedlichen Perspektiven
            und Wissensräume zusammengeführt und einander
            gegenübergestellt, wodurch die Möglichkeit zu Austausch,
            Diskussion und Imagination im Hinblick auf die ethische und
            ästhetische Auseinandersetzung von Kunst an der
            Schnittstelle zu Wissenschaft und Forschung geschaffen und
            für das Publikum geöffnet werden soll.<br>

                      collective <b>C-LAB</b> (UK) and the biohacker <b>Rüdiger

                        Trojok</b> (Berlin) presented by <i>Desiree
                        Förster</i> and <i>Daniela Silvestrin</i> on 24
                      August from 3 PM.<br>

                      sans-serif" size="2">C-LAB is a London based
                      artist collective, founded by the two artists and
                      scientists <b>Laura Cinti</b> and <b>Howard
                        Boland</b>, that is dealing critically with
                      contemporary intersections and cross-fertilisation
                      of art, science, and technology. The work of Cinti
                      and Boland focuses on the examination and
                      exploration of the implications, properties and
                      peculiarities of all which is or regards organic
                      and synthetic life. This being their incentive,
                      they want to create a platform that is open for
                      both artistic and scientific reflection and
                      discourse. <br>
                      <br>
                      In their most recent experimental art projects,
                      C-LAB developed a variety of genetic constructs
                      that led to new kinds of behavior of e.coli
                      bacteria; the scientists thereby explored the
                      possibilities of synthetic biology and techniques
                      of genetic engineering in an art context (e.g. in
                      artworks such as <em>kate, katEred, Stressostat

                        <font face="Verdana"><font size="2">Also the DIY
                            scene has started to experiment with biology
                            on a molecular level in private homes. The
                            technologies and chemicals that they use are
                            usually being acquired through the internet,
                            just like the theoretical background
                            knowledge and the working instructions. This
                            growing community meets in online forums or
                            festivals, and is connected worldwide. The
                            movement is creating both fascination and
                            discomfort, the potential misuse of modern
                            biotechnologies is creating fears in times
                            of repeated warnings of pandemics through
                            viruses such as SARS or H5N1. At the same
                            time this democratization of technologies
                            and knowledge can lead to new impulses for
                            the sciences as well as enhance public
                            debate and consciousness.<br>

                        </font><font face="Verdana"><font size="2">After
                            the peek into C-LAB's art practice the
                            Berlin-based biohacker Rüdiger Trojok will
                            give a presentation of the do-it-yourself
                            biohacking scene and the possibilities and
                            limits of bringing biotechnologies into
                            private spaces.<br>

                          <font size="2">In a following discussion round
                            these different perspectives and areas of
                            knowledge will be combined and confronted,
                            which will give the possibility for
                            exchange, discussion and imagination with
                            regard to the ethical and aesthetic
                            examination of art on the intersection with
