Er ist dabei auf eine flächige Darstellung des Raumes beschränkt, also einer perspektivischen Verkürzung von Räumlichkeiten durch Substraktion der Z-Achse. Das Resultat simuliert dem Rezipienten daher nur einen (virtuellen) Raum auf einer zweidimensionalen Fläche, bildet ihn aber nicht exakt nach. Diese Technik wurde schon bei der perspektivischen Zeichnung angewandt und wurde später von Foto/Filmkamera maschinisiert. Diese spezielle Form der Wahrnehmung von Virtualität versuchten schon frühe Experimente der Expandet Cinema Bewegung in den 60er Jahren zu brechen. Sie erzeugten räumliche Bilder, indem Sie auf Rauch oder in räumliche Gebilde wie Kuppeln projizierten. Ziel war es, die platte Fläche des Screens zu verlassen und den virtuellen Raum in das Wahrnehmungsfeld zu rücken – ohne Begrenzungen eines Rahmens, dem Fensterbeschnitt ins Virtuelle. Cave Systeme, die Anfang der 90er Jahre entwickelt wurden, sind direkte Nachfolger dieser Überlegungen. Mit weiterentwickelter Technologie – gerade durch Erzeugung rein digital-virtueller me (wobei der Abruf instantan erfolgt und keiner Linearität wie beim Film oder bei Texten unterworfen ist, vgl. Manovich) – wurde es möglich, ein räumliches Bild für jeden Standpunkt eines Betrachters in einem Raum (der Cave) zu erzeugen. Daten sind aber in ihrer reinen Form nichts und alles zugleich – sie sind nach Manovich frei veränderlich und in alle Formen übertragbar (mapping). Unsere Fragestellung beschäftigt sich also mit den Ausgabemedien zur Darstellung von Daten. Diese sollten alle Sinne einbeziehen, sich aber nicht primär auf einen Sinn konzentrieren. Fragen wie “Wie riechen oder schmecken Daten?”, “Wie können wir Daten fühlen?” sowie “Welche möglichen Zugänge zu Daten gibt es darüber hinaus?” bilden den Ausgangspunkt für eine tiefere Analyse. Hier zeigt sich das Potenzial des Mappings: Die technischen Möglichkeiten erlauben eine andere Simulation von physischen Reizen. The result simulates the recipient, therefore, only one (virtual) space on a two dimensional surface, but it does not simulate it exactly. This technique has been applied in perspective drawing, and was later mechanised through a photo/film camera. The experiments of the Expanded Cinema movement of the early 60’s already tried to break this perception of virtuality. They generated three-dimensional images by projecting on smoke or spatial structures such as domes. The generated space is seen as a "1:1 copy" of that which people perceive with the eye. Bourne of this tradition and the related focus on the visual stimulus as the strongest sense, the canvas was taken over by the computer screen and provides the primary access to digital data. This should involve all the senses, but focus not primarily on one sense. Ask "How does data smell or taste?", "How can we feel data?" and "What are the possible means of accessing data beyond this?" These are the starting points of my research for deeper analysis. Peter Weibel speaks in this context of a shift away from Simulation of sensations toward a synthesizing of sensations (Presentation ISEA2010). Weibel gives the example of a screen that does not reflect colors or brightnesses, but converts the brightness values into stimuli. This screen will not be considered, but is on the tongue of the viewer and allows them to "see with their tongue." The potential of mapping is therefore demonstrated: The technical possibilities allow a simulation of other physical stimuli. We have dealt with issues of perception and the digital possibilities of expanding the traditional access to data.
